California Proposition 65

California Proposition 65

California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, known as Proposition 65, requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposures to chemicals the state lists as causing cancer or reproductive harm. The list runs to roughly nine hundred chemicals and is updated at least once a year.

A warning does not mean a product is unsafe or that it breaks any safety standard. It means the product can expose you to a listed chemical above the level California has set as requiring notice. Many ordinary metal and plastic goods carry one, including hand tools.

Where you will see a warning

Where a warning applies to a Thurlex product, it appears on the product page before you buy, and on the product or its packaging. You will never be asked to buy something and find the warning only after it arrives.

Why tools often carry one

In this category the usual reasons are lead in brass and some alloy components, and phthalates in moulded or coated grips. Both are common across the hardware industry and neither is unique to us.

The warning we use

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
